TAKE A 360º TOUR OF VAGABOND!
The Blackbushe Heritage trust are excited to announce that we will be providing a regular visual update on the restoration of our Vickers Viking G-AGRW.
A few weeks ago, we were visited by Professor Robert Stone and Dr Vish Shingari from the XR & Telepresence Applications Team at Birmingham University where they are Human Factors Specialist.
Professor Bob is passionate about the role Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality has to play in digital heritage – “making the invisible visible” – bringing objects, sites and historical events to life for the purposes of education and public engagement.
To this end, Professor Bob and Dr Vish undertook an initial 4K 3D scan of Vagabond and the restoration hanger.
Well, the result is astonishing; we now have a detailed scan of the hanger and Vagabond, so everyone can now look at the progress being made on her restoration. If you follow this link, you can see how we are getting along from the comfort of your sofa!
Full instructions as to how to use the system can be downloaded here
As it was such an important event, some pictures of the day were taken to illustrate as to how the scanning took place:
We are extremely grateful to Professor Bob & Dr Vish for coming down from Birmingham to undertake this scan for us. They have promised to return in about 6 – 8 months’ time to rescan the aircraft and hanger so a record of the restoration can be kept. A special thank you should also be made to Barry Love from the Blackbushe Heritage Trust who facilitated the initial contact with the Team from Birmingham University.
After the scanning took place, Alexis Holding, BHT’s Accessibility Officer and BHT’s Head of Engineering, Paul Nicholls had a discussion with Professor Bob & Dr Vish as to how this technology could be used to make Vagabond one of the first vintage aircraft to be fully accessible to all. They demonstrated as to what could be achieved and along with what we have already planned, this new technology will enhance the visitor experience. A plan of action is underway and further announcements will be made in due course once everything is in place.
If you would like to get involved in the restoration of Vagabond in any of the areas mentioned, Engineering, Fundraising or Accessibility, please get in touch
